The Pollino Mountains provide a sort of barrier with the rest of Italy.  The climate is mild, warm and typically Mediterranean with grapes (The Romans referred to Calabria as 'The Land of Wine'), olives and citrus fruit growing in abundance.  The area is famous for a fruit known as the Bergamot which is mostly used as an ingredient in beauty products.  Calabrian cuisine makes use of local pork, lamb, fish, vegetables and fruit.  
 
The region is being re-discovered by the rest of the Italians as a tourism hotspot.  Clean seas in abundance beautiful countryside especially suited for walks, and some outstanding classical and medieval remains in museums and out in the open.
